I’m in a contract what can I do?

Many garbage companies purposefully make it difficult and costly to cancel a contract. They hide behind their contract, rather than their service. However, there are some options for special circumstances to exit a contract without paying any penalties.

  1. Is your service bad? If you have missed stops, unresolved billing issues, or any other service problems you can often exit a contract if you do the proper documentation and communicate your grievances through certify mail. If the trash company fails to fix the issue within a specified time period (usually 5-10 days) you can then give them 30 days notice to exit the contract.

  2. Have you received a hefty price increase? Trash companies will often increase their pricing outside the terms of the contract. The catch is, if you pay the bill you have now just agreed to the new pricing. If you receive a price increase, don’t pay the bill just yet. You have 30 days from the invoice date to give the trash company notice that you want to cancel the account due to a price increase. Once you receive confirmation of the cancellation you can then pay your bill (minus the increase).

  3. Wait for the contract to expire. Sometimes it is best just to wait things out. However, please keep in mind that you have to cancel sometime between 120 and 90 days before the contract expires, otherwise it will renew for another term. This is called an Evergreen Contract and it is legal in Pennsylvania. It is important you do not miss that 30 day cancellation window.
